“The true light, which gives light to everyone, was coming into the world. He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world did not know him.” John 1:9-10
Our heat pump stopped working this past week during the hottest days we’ve had so far this summer. We’ve had to adjust the way we live with a window unit, fans, keeping blinds closed,
and lights off. I noticed the other night, as I was getting ready for bed, the lamp in our bedroom was reflecting downward on the shade due to the curtains being moved from their original position, as if the light was being channeled to another part of that area.
Oftentimes, it can feel as if the light we have in us is being channeled toward feelings of despair and darkness. We’re pulled in many different directions through the news, social media, and struggles in this life. It’s easy to fall into a doom and gloom state of mind if we’re not careful.
In John 1:9, “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” Jesus is our light in the darkness. We can feel His presence when we seek Him.
When someone we love is going through a difficult time, our heart aches for them; I call this second-hand worry. Especially if it’s one of my children or grandchildren, it’s as if I am going through their pain myself.
During these times, I must call on the Holy Spirit to intervene for them and for me when I don’t know what to pray.
“Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.” Romans 8:26-27
We must channel the light to our hearts and minds and remember who God is and that He is still in ultimate control, even when we can’t see what He’s doing in the moment.
“And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.” John 1:14
Father, You know our hearts better than anyone. Help us to trust You with whatever plan You have for us and the people we love. Let Your light be channeled through our hearts and minds, and see only You in times of difficulty, knowing that You are the Light of our lives. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
